  • Like all current iPhones, it has a glass back.

  • The bezels are big by today’s standards, and it’s still very reflective – but look, I could reach the entire screen with one thumb if I wanted!

  • The SE continues to use Lightning instead of the industry standard USB-C.

Apple has tacitly discontinued the largest storage configuration of the iPhone SE. The SE was previously available in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB versions. However, the 256 GB model is no longer available in the Apple online shop.

But don’t take this to mean that the iPhone SE is going anywhere. In fact, analysts and journalists have released several similar reports claiming the iPhone SE will be upgraded early next year.

According to reports, the 2022 iPhone SE will feature Apple’s A15 chip – the same one found in the newly announced iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPad mini. According to Nikkei, the phone would also have 5G and have Qualcomm’s X60 modem.

So we suspect that the point is not to interrupt or cannibalize the SE, but rather to cannibalize the iPhone 12 mini less.

Last year, Apple introduced two different phones in one-handed sizes: the current iteration of the iPhone SE (which took its case from the iPhone 8) and the iPhone 12 mini (which was a significantly smaller variant of the otherwise identical iPhone12).

But while the SE and 12 mini sold well when their sales were put in one bucket, they were individually some of Apple’s worst-selling phones. And the Mini fared worse than the SE. This is suboptimal for Apple, because the company is asking more for the Mini. If this change turns some potential SE buyers into mini buyers, it could be a boon to Apple’s bottom line.

However, analysts have been predicting for months that the 2022 iPhone range won’t have a mini model at all after the SE received a major update.

In any case, lovers of small telephones still have two, now more differentiated options – for the time being.
