After two weeks of preparation, Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United is finally here. The Portuguese star will see his first action with the Red Devils since his $ 28 million transfer from Juventus as the club host Newcastle United at Old Trafford (10 a.m. ET on USA Network, Universo and fuboTV). He will be in the starting XI.

Ronaldo’s last appearance in a Manchester United shirt at Old Trafford was in May 2009 and ended with cheers after another English Premier League title. It was one of several conquests during his years at the club between 2003 and 2009 when he became a world star. A different player today, the 36-year-old went from being an unstoppable winger to a seasoned goalscorer in his teenage years.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will kick off Ronaldo after confirming the day before that he would do something. Ronaldo started his last competitive game for Portugal with a win against the Republic of Ireland on September 1. That was his only start in an official game since his last game at the European Championships in June. He also came for Juventus in his first Serie A game of the season before joining the bench.

58th minute: Newcastle is coming close again! Almiron almost hits Saint-Maximin on a cross in the Manchester United penalty area. Almiron has a strong game.

56th minute: Destination Newcastle! Both Almiron and Saint-Maximin get the ball, and the latter serves it perfectly for an unmarked Javier Manquillo who fires home. It’s 1-1!

52nd min: It’s the same script from the first half: Man United are looking for a way and Newcastle are trying to ease the pressure with continued possession. If the magpies bring Miguel Almiron or Allan Saint-Maximin to the ball, they are more unpredictable forward.

46th minute: The second half is running. No changes.

Halftime: Manchester United 1, Newcastle United 0

Halftime: Manchester United were the better side at the start, but the game became more even as the minutes went on. Newcastle were organized in defense and Man United received only three shots on goal. Ronaldo was active early on but then the touch subsided and when they came Newcastle was all over him. The poke home on a spilled shot is exactly the kind of goal the first half deserves. The pressure on Ronaldo and Manchester United is gone.

47 + min: Goal Ronaldo! And just as it looked like halftime was going to end 0-0, a shot from Mason Greenwood was spilled by the goalkeeper and Ronaldo accepted the gift and shot the rebound home.

45th minute: Two minutes of stoppage time. Nobody expected Newcastle to hold Manchester United for that long.

39th minute: Ronaldo has teamed up twice and his shot into the box is stuffed. Ball jumps to Fernandes, but nothing comes from his cross into the penalty area.

38th minute: Newcastle center-back Jamaal Lascelles knocked Ronaldo off the ball once and cleared a ball in the penalty area a few minutes later before it could get to Ronaldo.

33rd minute: Ronaldo is lurking, but he wasn’t nearly involved as he was in the early stages of the game. Newcastle have settled in well with the game. The magpies defend deeply, but they do not crawl yet.

30th minute: Bruno Fernandes tries to make up for this with a shot from outside the box, which Jadon Sancho almost deflects on goal. Ball ends wide.

28th minute: What an opportunity for Newcastle! Bruno Fernandes is picked up in his own half, but Joe Willock shoots up from the right half of the box instead of passing him.

27th minute: The Newcastle goalkeeper is charged with wasting time by the referee. Newcastle is milking dead balls every second, including this particular kick.

26th min .: In order not to be overshadowed by his compatriot, Bruno Fernandes attempts a bold 35-yard shot over the goalkeeper, but it ends over the gate. It is sung by the crowd at Old Trafford.

25th minute: Saint-Maximin wins a corner after his cross from the left goes dangerously over the gate and Luke Shaw clears. Nothing comes of it.

23rd minute: Newcastle gains confidence in the Manchester United half. First Miguel Almiron and then Matt Ritchie fired shots without hesitation. The last one was that of Ritchie and David de Gea has to dive to stop him.

19.Min .: A Varane header from a corner kick ends on the far right. That was dangerous.

17.Min .: Ronaldo makes it easy and makes quick connection passes when he’s not near the box.

16. Min .: Manchester United’s stormy start has now fizzled out some. Newcastle get some possession time in the Manchester half.

11.Min .: Ronaldo again! He runs across the left side of the box to the Newcastle defense but the shot hits the side netting. He’s definitely going on it. He feels the occasion.

9th min .: Ronaldo tries a half volley from an acute angle after Ciaran Clark’s header stays in the air. It goes a long way, but that was a tough shot.

7th min .: Newcastle’s number 7 Joelinton pressures Man United’s Varane, wins the ball and fires a weak shot on goal. He should have done better. Newcastle won’t get a lot of those looks.

5th min .: It’s all Manchester United to start here. Ronaldo came close to a ball in the penalty area, but still had no clear looks.
