Honduras vs. USMNT: Reside rating, updates, highlights from the CONCACAF World Cup qualification

The US men’s national team is aiming for a win to finish their first three qualifying games on a positive note. Team and head coach Gregg Berhalter made it clear that they are not satisfied with the two draws from the first two games, and a win in Honduras will give the young team courage ahead of the next three games in October.

San Pedro Sula has historically been a difficult venue for the USMNT. The Americans have lost one draw and one defeat in their last two qualifying matches to a Honduran team looking to return to the World Cup finals after appearing in 2010 and 2014. Both Honduras and the US did not make it into the 2018 edition in Russia.

The two nations are even two points after two games in CONCACAF qualifiers, but Honduras will feel better after the two draws as they both played away in Canada and El Salvador. The USMNT started 0-0 in El Salvador but were held 1-1 by Canada in their last home game.

MORE: Why there is no VAR in CONCACAF qualifying

45th minute: Three minutes of stoppage time. The US could really use the half-time break to regroup. It looks really disjointed.

40th minute: A long injury delay for Kervin Arriaga, who came off the field on a stretcher after colliding with Kellyn Acosta. The game finally resumes and Arriaga is finally back.

33rd minute: Honduras with some confidence. A shot by Rubio goes past Turner’s goal.

27th minute: Honduras destination! Diego Rodriguez and Brayan Moya cross is all alone in the box and heads past Matt Turner after the rebound. Where was John Brooks? The US defense cannot cover. Not a good defensive moment for the US.

24th minute: Another US opportunity! George Bello crosses into the Honduras penalty area and Josh Sargent heads to Ricardo Pepi, who turns the ball but does not get good contact and it ends up high.

19.Min .: Opportunity for the USA! Kellyn Acosta pulls out a cross into the penalty area, in which Christian Pulisic does not get quite the right contact. Good idea from Acosta. The US doesn’t seem to have any problems with attacks.

16. Min .: After stopping a US attack, Honduras changes quickly: Kervin Arriaga feeds Brayan Moya in the US box and Moya’s shot hits the side netting.

11.Min .: Tyler Adams with a long vertical ball towards Christian Pulisic and the Honduras goalkeeper comes out and rattles into his own player to clear.

9th min .: A Honduras cross goes straight in front of the US goal, but there were no players to take advantage of.

4th min .: Behind-the-back pass from Gregg Berhalter:

3rd minute: Another US opportunity! Josh Sargent broke into the left side of the Honduras box and he had Tyler Adams all alone across the box but couldn’t get the ball to him. Honduras escapes.

1st minute: USMNT on the forefoot after 18 seconds! George Bello fires an explosion that misses the target. The US intentions are clear.

10:19 pm: While we wait for the game to start, this is a video that USMNT fans should watch in light of Weston McKennie’s suspension and sacking:

10:13 pm: A well-known sound is also coming back in San Pedro Sula:

South Africa flashbacks with all the vuvuzelas in this stadium.

USA vs. Honduras: Starting lineups

The USMNT has a list of players who will miss the game, including a handful of stars like Gio Reyna (paralyze), Sergino Dest (Ankle) and Weston McKennie (Team injury). It means that Christian Pulisic will have an even bigger bullseye on the back than usual.

MORE: Why Weston McKennie doesn’t play for the USMNT

Berhalter calls with a 3-4-3 formation James Sands in midfield with Kelly’s Acosta . George Bello (left) and Tyler Adams (right) will be the two full-backs and the 18-year-old Ricardo Pepi makes his first start for the USMNT as a center-forward.

USMNT starting grid (3-4-3, from left to right): 1-Matt Turner-GK – 15-Mark McKenzie 6-John Brooks, 12-Miles Robinson – 21-George Bello, 23-Kellyn Acosta, 16-James Sands, 4-Tyler Adams – 9-Josh Sargent, 14-Ricardo Pepi , 10-Christian Pulisic
