GUANGZHOU, China – Xpeng announced a new electric sports utility vehicle on Friday as competition intensifies in the Chinese market for new energy vehicles.

The G9 is the fourth production model from Xpeng. The company plans to launch the car in China in the third quarter of 2022, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. The person asked is not named because the matter is confidential.

But the company also said the car was designed for international markets. Xpeng began delivering its flagship P7 sedan to Norway, the first overseas market, that year.

“The G9 is our first model designed and developed from the ground up for both the international and Chinese markets, bringing our most sophisticated designs to our customers around the world,” said Henry Xia, co-founder of Xpeng, in a press release.

Xpeng unveiled the G9 Sport Utility at the Guangzhou Auto Show on Friday, November 19, 2021. It is the fourth production model and the second SUV from Xpeng.

With the introduction of the G9, Xpeng’s product range is expanded to include a fourth car after the G3 SUV and the P7 and P5 sedans. It is the second SUV in Xpeng’s portfolio and expands this competitive market segment with another electric vehicle.

Xpengs G9 will compete against Tesla’s Model Y, Nios ES6 and Li Autos Li One.

The company has not yet released any pricing or range details.

The car will also be equipped with Nvidia’s Orin-X chips for autonomous driving.

According to Xpeng, the G9 will be compatible with its X-Power compressors, which can charge cars for up to 200 kilometers in 5 minutes.

The G9 will also have light detection and ranging technology or lidar. These systems send out lasers that bounce back to measure distance. These returning rays are processed by an algorithm to create a three-dimensional representation of the surrounding objects – a key technology for autonomous vehicles to understand their surroundings.
