MLB desk 2021: Up to date playoff sequence, magic numbers from September 24th

The 2021 MLB season is drawing to a close fast, and as it nears its end, several postseason races have drawn the greatest focus.

All but two division races appear to be locked up. The Braves moved up to first place in August and are holding the top spot in early September, with the Phillies not far behind. The Giants were quietly the best team in baseball for most of the season, but they face an incredibly talented Dodgers squad at NL West.

Both races for the wild card appear to be battles to the end. In the American League, the Red Sox and Yankees entered September and held onto the top two spots but were under pressure from the Blue Jays, Mariners and Athletics. The team that finished second in NL West is the first wildcard, but second place is still open as the Phillies, Reds, Padres and Mets chase the streaking Cardinals.

Magic MLB numbers for 2021

This is the part where fans of teams in playoff spots – or those who are out right now – really start getting their calculators out. The magic number is the combination of wins and / or losses of a team by the closest competitor it takes to earn a playoff spot.

The magic number is listed for each team leading the division to win the title and the elimination number for the teams that are behind in the division. The same information is provided for those on the hunt for the wildcard. Information is from MLB.com.
