Elon Musk confirmed Tesla’s commitment to China, saying the automaker would continue to expand its investments in the country.

Musk’s comments came in a pre-recorded question-and-answer stream at the World Internet Conference hosted by the Cyberspace Administration of China.

It is the second time this month that Musk has highly praised the nation essential to its electric vehicle company, saying it is a “global leader in digitization.” Less than two weeks ago, during another taped stream at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress, Musk said Chinese automakers are “the most competitive in the world.”

“My honest observation is that China is devoting a lot of resources and effort to adopting the latest digital technologies in various industries, including the automotive industry, making China a world leader in digitization,” Musk said in the latest video. “Tesla will continue to expand our investments and R&D efforts in China.”

Tesla has tried to improve its reputation in China after a series of negative press. The company has faced government privacy scrutiny and a handful of product recalls in China. Beijing reportedly restricted or banned the use of Tesla’s electric vehicles by some nationals and military personnel.

Musk called for data protection in his speech and indicated what types of data are stored locally.

“At Tesla, we are pleased that a number of laws and regulations have been published to strengthen data management,” said Musk.

“Tesla has set up a data center in China to locate all of the data generated by our business here, including production, sales, service and billing. All personal data is stored in China without being transferred overseas. Just a lot In rare cases, for example, spare parts orders from overseas are data that are released for international transfer. “

The company broke ground for a large factory in Shanghai in 2019. Tesla sold 44,264 vehicles made in China in August, 31,379 of which were for export. It was an increase from 32,968 Chinese-made vehicles sold in July and 33,155 units sold in June.
