The NBA 2K League announced a partnership with DUX Gaming on Wednesday to launch its first expansion into Latin America.
After the NBA G League, which officially welcomes a Mexican team in 2021, the NBA 2K League is following suit to expand its global presence. DUX Gaming, a sports organization based in Madrid, will announce the team’s hometown at a later date. The team will join the Gen. G Tigers of Shanghai as the league’s second franchise outside of the US and Canada.
The newly announced Mexican team will start playing in the spring of 2022 when the next NBA 2K League season kicks off. Former NBA 2K League Draft prospect Rafael “RafaelTGR” Tobias Garcera Rodrigo has been appointed General Manager of DUX Gaming’s expansion team.
“This is a historic day as we welcome another leading international organization to the NBA 2K League family,” said NBA 2K League President Brendan Donohue. “DUX Gaming has a proven track record of growing its fan base in new and creative ways, making it an ideal partner to help the NBA 2K League successfully expand into Latin America, where basketball and 2K are already incredibly popular. We’re excited very much about it DUX Gaming will represent Mexico in the NBA 2K League in the coming years. “
Founded in 2018, DUX Gaming has quickly grown into a multi-pronged company that goes beyond video games. In 2020 it became the first eSports organization to buy a semi-professional football club and bought DUX Internacional de Madrid, a Spanish third division team. DUX Gaming also owns DUX Logroño, a women’s football club. Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois is an important investor in DUX Gaming along with Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias.
“As a well-established organization in Europe, it is a real honor to now become the first NBA 2K League team in Latin America,” said Mario Fernández, Chief Executive Officer of DUX Gaming. “We can’t wait to work with Brendan and the entire NBA 2K League team to build our fan base in Mexico and expand their audiences to Latin America in the hope that everyone, especially Spanish speakers, will join the Infinite Club.”
Sports content creator DjMaRiiO is expected to partner with DUX Gaming on localized content and grassroots events for Mexican and Latin American communities. On all social media platforms, DjMaRiiO has a total of over 10 million subscribers and followers, which enables an integrated audience. DUX Gaming’s Mexican expansion team will participate in the upcoming NBA 2K League expansion draft on November 17, which will allow up to three players to join the six-player list allocated to each team.
The NBA 2K League opened its inaugural season in May 2018 with 17 teams, each affiliated to an NBA franchise. Prior to the arrival of DUX Gaming, the league had grown to 23 teams, 22 of which are associated with NBA teams. Wizards District Gaming is the current back-to-back champion and swept Jazz Gaming over three games earlier this month.
