Will Sidney Crosby play tonight? The Penguins’ captaincy standing was up to date firstly of the 2021-22 NHL season

The Penguins raised a brief glimmer of hope over the weekend that they could open their 2021-22 season with Sidney Crosby after the Pittsburgh captain ran with the team on Saturday and participated in the team’s morning skate ahead of the last preseason game in Columbus.

But that flint of possibility was doused on the morning of the season opener when it was revealed he was on the team’s injured non-squad list. While on that list, his $ 8.7 million cap hit counts towards the Penguins’ payroll but not towards the team’s 23-man roster limit.

Pittsburgh will open the season against defending champions Lightning on Tuesday evening in Tampa Bay.

What is Sidney Crosby’s injury?

On September 8, the penguins announced that Crosby had had surgery on his left wrist.

“This isn’t a new injury for Sid. It’s something he’s been playing through for years,” said general manager Ron Hextall in the team’s announcement. “After exhausting all minimally invasive options and having had much discussion, it was decided that the operation was in his best interests.”

Crosby had previously debrided the wrist on August 31, 2020, according to then GM Jim Rutherford. The wrist didn’t seem to bother him much in the 2021 season, as he scored 62 points (24 goals, 38 assists) in 55 games; his only missed game was due to COVID-19 logs. He scored just two points in the Penguins’ loss in six games against the Islanders.

When is Sidney Crosby expected back?

Pittsburgh said Crosby would be missing out on training camp and at least the first week of the season when the news was originally released. The Penguins star is expected to miss the Tuesday and Thursday games against the Lightning and Panthers, respectively. Pittsburgh opened the season at home against the Blackhawks on Saturday.

His loss leaves a big hole in the top six and the power game for the penguins. With 468 goals and 1,325 points, Crosby is facing a great year in North America – and in China. The 2010 golden goal scorer was called up to Canada’s Olympic team in 2022.

Also on the shelf in Steel City is Evgeni Malkin, who had an operation on his right knee in early June. He was transferred to the long-term injury reserve on Tuesday.
